Urban Floating Population Condition Of Social Support

In the1980s, the household-responsibility system and the reform of rural managementsystem were popularized in China’s rural areas. As a result of that, a large number of ruralsurplus labors emerged and shifted from agriculture to city labor. With the rapid developmentof China’s economy and society, the number of the floating population increased day by dayhas gradually become a large part in the society with its own characteristics from then on.The floating population, especially the migrant workers which take the largest proportionof floating population, has contributed a great deal to our economic and social development.The floating population have a significant influences on economic and social development, atthe same time, they are under tremendous existing pressures as well. They cannot resist risks ofexisting pressure by themselves alone and thus needing support and help from the those on theoutside. Social support involves both objective support and subjective support, that is, materialand real assistances as well as the emotional exchange and spiritual comfort. Social support cannot only help individuals gain strength to overcome and get through the difficulties, but alsohelp people adapt to changes and new environment. The social support of the floatingpopulation studied in this thesis helps to understand the existing and psychological troubles ofthe floating population and analysis the possibility and ways to get through difficulties so as tobetter adapt to city life. Meanwhile, promoting the development of the floating population canalso help reduce social problems to ensure social harmony and maintain prolonged stability.Therefore, the study of the floating population has an important theoretical and practicalsignificance.The study of the support of the urban floating population in this paper is, according to thedifferent groups that support the floating population, divided into formal support by thegovernment and community and informal support by the blood relationship, geographyrelationship and social relationship. The study is also analyzed from four aspects including theinstrumental support, emotion support, information support and social relationship support.The analysis and study of the survey showed that the urban floating population got betterinformal support than formal. The informal support helped the floating population toovercome the difficulties and get out of troubles in ways of instrumental support, emotion support, informational support and social relationship support in order to help them get withthe city. The influence of the blood relationship and geography relationship on the floatingpopulation is especially strong. The colleague support fully supplemented the bloodrelationship and geography relationship, but was limited by instability of the floatingpopulation’s colleague relationship because of the status quo and special characteristics ofemployment.The obviously lack of formal support of the floating population resulted from the severelack of implement and supervision of government and the floating population management ofdistricts. The formal support has an incomparable advantage, so the lack of formal supportinfluenced the floating population significantly. Therefore, the ones who supply the floatingpopulation with formal support should take on their responsibilities to establish and improvesystematization and standardization of formal support to make formal support the effectiveguarantee of the floating population’s getting with the city.
