For foreign language learners, reading is an important skill.Teaching reading is an important part of foreign language teaching inmiddle schools and ways of improving students’ reading ability. Since1980s, great changes have taken place in English teaching in China. Newteaching methods have been adopted into English teaching of juniormiddle schools. In teaching of reading, teachers are still using traditionalteaching methods that focus on words, phrases, and grammar whichignore the impact of reading strategies and reading habits. So reading isstill a major difficulty in learning English.Action research is a kind of scientific education methodology whichpopular in the past two decades abroad. In recent years, educators inChina began to pay more attention and gradually began to use thismethod to improve their teaching ability. Action research aims to solvepractical problems which focused on a specific teaching problem, throughthe collection of teaching materials and then carry out the research.The thesis aims to improve students’ reading ability through actionresearch.The first chapter introduces the purpose and significance of thestudy. The second chapter is devoted to the definition of reading, readingstrategies, reading patterns, and the definition of action research, features,procedures, types and the advantage of English teachers in junior school carrying out the action research. The third chapter describes the processof the action research, the fourth chapter is the reflection, and the lastchapter is the conclusion. In teaching process, the author first finds themain problem is the reading strategies, and then through interviews andquestionnaires of students, the author verifies the restricting factors ofstudents’ reading ability. After that, the author begins to design a10-weekof action research for students. Finally, through data analysis, the authorsummarizes the findings and then to reflect. The findings in this actionresearch will be beneficial for teachers who use this series of textbooksand they will, in turn, shed light on my next action research as well.
