A Research On Population Quality And Its Contribution To Economic Growth In China

When coming into the twenty-first centruy of the knowledge and information, theeconomic growth no longer relys on general human resources to promote,but mainlyrely on science and technology. The world competition in the future is ultimately acompetition of talents. To maintain sustained economic development, we must improvethe population quality. As a populous country, China’s population growth and lack ofnatural resources is a basic contradiction in the process of economic development. Toresolve this contradiction lies in the control of population,while improving populationquality, with human capital instead of natural capital. The population quality hasplayed a crucial role on the regional economic development. Only we recognize theimportance to improve the population quality, when we make appropriate measures tocontinuously improve the population quality, ensure the sustainable and stabledevelopment of all regions. This paper is divided into four parts.The first part: Referring domestic and foreign scholars’ study on the quality of thepopulation, combined with China’s national conditions and requirements of thestatistical analysis of population quality, clearing the content quality of thepopulation,establishing the comprehensive evaluation index system of populationquality,which includes the average life expectancy,natural population growth rate etcand making a preliminary descriptive statistical analysis of China’s basic situation ofthe current population quality.The second part: To collect the various indicator datas of quality of China’spopulation from1989to2008,and use principal component analysis method to extracttwo principal components from fourteen quality indicators to reflect a comprehensiveindex information.Based on principal component scores and their weights,wecalculate the population quality comprehensive evaluation to reflect the quality ofChina’s population changes in recent years. The third part: Seven economic indicators which fully reflect the overall economicdevelopment will be selected by using principal component method to extract twoprincipal components.And they will be made a canonical correlation analysis withmain components of population quality.Economic growth model including variablesof population quality will be builded to estimate the contribution of the populationquality’s improving to economic growth.The fourth part: Based on the above studying, promoting some policyrecommendations to improve the population quality for economic development.
