Vocational education is one of the important parts in China’s higher education system, which has occupied half of higher education in China. Every year, there is a huge number of vocational graduates, but they showed significantly disadvantaged in the job market, mainly due to the lack of the vocational core competencies such as communicate with people, teamwork, problem-solving and so on. The vocational core competencies is a kind of competencies that can keep developing, and accompany us throughout our lives, and it is the key ability for the workers to do their best in job. Only to improve students’ occupation core ability, the graduates can adapt to the changes of jobs and environment, they can become really high skilled talents. However, the work for higher vocational students’ vocational core competencies training is still at the initial stage currently.This reasearch systematically studied the theoretical knowledge and practical experience in domestic and international vocational core competencies training, analized the necessities of strengthening higher vocational students’ vocational core competencies, and pointed out that strengthening the higher vocational college students’ vocational core competencies was an inevitable requirement of economic development, it was the needs of perfecting education system, it was required for its own survival and development and it was the need of students’ all-round development.Through methods such as questionnaires and interviews, this research investigated the status quo of the higher vocational students’ vocational core competencies training in Shandong Province, and pointed out that the main problem that existed in the training work of higher vocational college students’ vocational core competencies:lacking comprehensive and correct understanding for the vocational core competencies; the ability of solving practical problems was poor for higher vocational college students; lacking system and emphasis for the training work of the vocational core competencies. And by the analysis of the cause of the problem, we putted forward the corresponding countermeasures:higher vocational students should attach great importance to and actively participate in the vocational core competencies training; the correct positioning of higher vocational education; optimizatiing of the specialty setting; to establish competency-based pluralistic teaching evaluation system; to strengthen the construction of teachers’ team in higher vocational colleges; the teachers should effectively integrate students’ vocational core competencies training into the teaching process; higher vocational colleges should take effective measures to promote the construction of experiment base; local governments should make favourable policy, to increase the vocational core competencies training support.This article studied the training work of the vocational college students’ vocational core competencies culture in Shandong Province, it offered a reference for enhanceing and improving the training work of the vocational college students’ vocational core competencies. It may well be ancillary to improve students’ employability, and to promote students’ overall development.
