Shyness is a general emotional experience, but serious shyness carries a lot ofnegative consequences. For example, adolescents tortured by shyness, are unwillingto relate to people, avoid the opportunities to perform in public, attract less attentionof teachers and schoolmates, lack partners or friends, closes their minds and hearts.Someone even developed into social phobia. The current studies about shyness mainlyfocus on pupils and undergraduates, rarely on middle school students.This study included631middle school students, investigated their shyness,attributional style, optimistic orientation and social anxiety through questionnaires.The major conclusions of the present study were as follows:1. Shyness had significant prediction function on social anxiety;2. Optimistic orientation was found to partially mediate the relation betweenshyness and social anxiety. In other words, on the one hand, shyness directly affectedsocial anxiety, and on the other hand, shyness indirectly affected social anxiety viaoptimistic orientation.3. Attributional style and optimistic orientation were found to mediate therelation between shyness and social anxiety together. In other words, on the one hand,shyness directly affected social anxiety, and on the other hand, shyness affectedoptimistic orientation via attributional style, and then affected social anxiety.
