Reading is one of the main ways to obtain knowledge. As the same as learning Chineseand foreign language, the process of learning mathematics also can’t stay away from thereading activity. Reading ability of Mathematics is indispensable part during mathematicslearning and it plays an important role in it. Therefor, it is very necessary to research andinvestigate the present situation of students’ mathematics reading ability.First of all, the author comprehened research status and new development aboutmathematics reading both at home and abroad by the way of studying and summing upexisting doucuments. Then,we do a investigation based on more than600students in amiddle school from Grade one to Gread three in the city of Lianyungang where the authorworks.The aim of the survey is to understand the status of junior middle school students’mathematical reading ability. The survey results show that most of the middle schoolstudents’ mathematical reading ability is weak and the main problem is that a number ofstudents have difficulty in understanding the language of mathematics.In view of the case, applying the experience of other advanced teaching methods forreference and combining with authors’ teaching experience, two aspects of the study werecarried out both inside and outside the classroom by analyzing some problems exposed inthe investigation. The guidance of the teacher is considered to be the main way. Theguidance puts particular emphasis on the method of reading. According to themathematical characteristics of the content, classification guidance has been developed,such as reading guidance of mathematical theorems, formula and examples. The teachingmethod of mathematics reading was designed in view of the different class type. Outsidethe class, the self-study of students’ reading is the main way. Through recommendingmathematical extracurricular readings to students, it puts particular emphasis on thecultivation of the students’ reading interest. It is expected to improve the students’mathematics reading ability from these two aspects above.Through some research of this paper, the article hopes that let more teachers learn how to guide the students’ mathematics reading, thus improving the students’ mathematicsreading ability.
