A Study On Relationship Among University Students’ Sense Of Emptiness, Coping Style And School Adaption

Mental health problems of the university students are the focus of the current research. There are a lot of researches on negative emotions which affect mental health. Most of the researchers focus on depression, anxiety and other emotions, but they rarely focus on sense of emptiness. There are few researches to sense of emptiness, and the available researches were limited in considering sense of emptiness as a byproduct of depression, anxiety and other emotions. Viktor Emil Frankl investigated groups of students in Europe to research existential vacuum, and he found that25%of the students had the problem of existential vacuum more or less. However,60%of groups of students in America reported they had the same problem. Therefore, the survey on contemporary university students in China is very urgent and practically significant.In view of this, this research based on the emotional problems of university students learn from Frankl’s perspectives of Logotherapy theory, and utilizes questionnaire method to authorized strength questionnaire of university students’ sense of emptiness, and investigates a total of642undergraduate and graduate individuals from Chongqing and Henan and to explore the level of development and characteristics of the contemporary university students’ sense of emptiness. In addition, we also combine the questionnaire with the Simple Coping Style Questionnaire, and the China College Student Adjustment Scale to analyze the relationship among sense of emptiness, coping style, and school adaption. The results mainly indicate that: (1)The university students’ sense of emptiness can be divided into four psychology dimensions which are sense of value, freedom of will, negative affect and negative behavior. The university students’ sense of emptiness questionnaire which is constituted by18questions has good reliability and validity. It can be used as a measuring tool about the university students’ sense of emptiness.(2)The university students’ sense of emptiness total score in the medium range, and negative affect and negative behavior get the highest scores; the level of male’s sense of emptiness is higher than female; the level of university students’sense of emptiness decrease with grade; undergraduate and graduate individuals total score are no significant differences on variables, however the score of graduate is lower than undergraduate significantly in sense of value and freedom of will; the level of the less lessons students’ sense of emptiness is higher than the more lessons students’.(3)The person who has high level school adaption is lower than who has low level school adaption in sense of emptiness; the person who utilizes positive coping style is lower than who utilizes negative coping style; Coping style and school adaption are good predictions of sense of emptiness.Coping style and school adaption influence sense of emptiness; Coping style indirectly affect sense of emptiness through school adaption, meanwhile, directly effect sense of emptiness.
