The course of life science is one of the basic courses in natural sciences in juniorhigh school. Its purpose is to cultivate every student’s quality of life science. Itadvocates the ways of learning such as "independence, discovery, cooperation" bythe means of observation, experiments, and exploring. Doing assignments are a basicand indispensible form of learning which can help students understand basicconcepts and knowledge, obtain theoretical methods and practical skills, andimprove their abilities of critical and creative thinking. Scientific understanding ofassignment design is of great importance for the teachers to integrate differentstages of teaching by giving assgnments and feedbacks so as to motivate and guidestudents to learn in creative and efficient ways. Optimizing assignment designingcomplies with the teaching requests of “the curriculum standards of life science inhigh school” and it has the important practical significance to deepen the life sciencecurriculum reform and optimize life science classroom teaching.Through literature review and theoretic study, this thesis explains thetheoretical and practical value of assignment designing in the teaching process of lifescience in junior high schools. It builds the basic framework of its designing modeand proposes the key points for practice: monotonous rote learning should bereplaced with experiential and practical learning with open questions on thefoundation of strengthened ground-laying training, in accordance with the objectivesof the courses in the subject in question; students of different capacities should begiven assignments of different formats and levels regarding the goals of the phasesfor teaching. Field study is adopted in this research and controlled experiments wereconducted among eighth-grade students from two parallel classes. The result showsthat problem-based assignment designing could significantly enhance eighth-gradestudents performance and efficiency in the learning process of life science, andmeanwhile stimulate their interest for study and enhance their comprehensive skills. In a word, optimizing assignment designing has great effects. This thesis also reflectson the shortcomings of research and proposes suggestions for further study in thisfield.
