Homework as well as classroom teaching, plays an important part in teaching injunior middle schools. However, teachers pay more attention to the design andorganization of classroom teaching activities than homework design. Moreover, theredo exist many problems in current homework design, such as too much randomlydesigned homework, too much dependence on the existing exercise books and thelack of hierarchy. Because of the unequal development of students’ intelligence andnon-intelligence factors, many drawbacks must arise if teachers assign the samehomework to all. To solve the problem, there is a great need to assign homework in ascientific way.Guided by such theories as humanistic theory, the theory of multipleintelligences, language input theory and language output hypothesis, and byadopting such research methods as literature study, questionnaire survey method,interview and comparative method, this research has conducted an in-depth studyinto the current English homework design in junior middle schools. The researchfocuses on analyzing the features and deficiencies in the current homework designand conducting the practical research on the hierarchical English homework designfor junior middle school students.During the practical research, guided by the principle of hierarchy—dividingstudents according to their levels of English and the degrees of difficulty inhomework, the author assigns hierarchical homework to the students in her class.Then, the author conducts the interviews with the students from different learninggroups and analyzes the results of two examinations. The result indicates thathierarchical homework plays a positive part in improving students’ learning interestsin English and promoting the efficiency of their homework. What’s more, the authoralso provides specific cases of hierarchical homework design and make a thoroughanalysis of them. The author offers some suggestions on the hierarchical Englishhomework design from the theoretical and practical aspects, so that both teachersand students can benefit from homework design.
