With the development of science and technology in the late 20th century, multimedia-assisted teaching has become an important and widely used teaching method. Many researches related to multimedia -assisted teaching in English reading have been conducted in colleges or high schools, where the application of multimedia has been comparatively proficient. However, in some suburban schools the use of multimedia is not very effective and the students'reading abilities are relatively poor. Besides, some teachers cannot properly use multimedia to assist teaching in English reading. So how to improve the students'reading abilities with the assistance of multimedia in a senior high school has become one of the hot issues.The research was conducted in a suburban school called Fen Dou Middle School, which is located in a small town of Shanba in Inner Mongolia. The subjects of the research are the students from three classes in Senior Two. There are about50 students in each class. They all received the same reading lessons in a term.Through this research, the writer expects the following questions will be answered:1. How should teachers use multimedia to assist teaching in English reading to improve students'reading abilities?2. What are the advantages and problems of using multimedia to assist teaching in English reading?During the research, the writer designed two questionnaires, one classroom observation sheet and two reading tests. After the research, the writer collected the data and analyzed carefully, then found the results and conclusion. The writer found some good ways of using multimedia to assist teaching in English reading lessons. Multimedia had many advantages to improve students'reading abilities. However, there are also some problems that affect the effective use of multimedia teaching. The writer also gave some suggestions to deal with the problems.Also, there are some limitations in this research, we had better continue with the further study about multimedia-assisted teaching in English reading.
