The problem of regional economic imbalanced development is a common problem allaround the world. China has developed so rapidly that she has also appeared this issue which isbecoming more and more serious since the reform and opening policy carried out. This issue hasbeen concerned by many scholars. They has done research and in-depth discussion from differentangles and different zoning methods on this problem. Certainly we agree on the existing problemof regional economic imbalanced development in our country.Based on this, our sight focused,and our scope narrowed, we will study if the problem of economic imbalanced developmentexist between prefecture-level cities in a specific province.This thesis locks in Hebei Province which consists of11prefecture-level cities, and will doin-depth study on the11prefecture-level cities’ economic development, and then make specificcomparative evaluation around their economic competitiveness. Firstly, we describe thetheoretical basis and research of regional economic imbalanced development at home and abroad,introduce the development status of prefecture-level cities in Hebei Province. Secondly, wecollect the economic data of the11prefecture-level cities in2003,2005,2007and2009as thebasis for the analysis, use multivariate statistical analysis of the factor analysis and principalcomponent analysis methods over the economic data analysis, find out the main factors to affectthe economy, and then establish the factor model to calculate the total score which reflects theeconomic competitiveness. The result is: Tangshan, Shijiazhuang and Handan rank the top three,Zhangjiakou, Xingtai and Hengshui rank the last three, we can see the obvious score gap whichprove the existence of the problem of regional economic imbalanced development. Thirdly, weuse the cluster analysis method to classify the cities’ level in accordance with the total score, weget4categories, each category contains the cities whose level of economic development areclose to each other. At last, we make a specific analysis on the differences in the levels ofeconomic development and competitiveness of the11prefecture-level cities of Hebei Province,and then find out the reasons for the gap according to the model, and propose further concreteand feasible measures to improve the situation.
