"Villages within the city" is a special social phenomenon appearing with the development of urbanization in China."Villages within the city" has become the most common difficulty to which most of cities in China have to face in the process of modernization construction. Presently, the problems of "villages within the city" mainly include dense and disorder building, monotonous and outmoded style, dirty and messy environment, complicated demographic composition, difficult security administration, lower cultural qualities of villagers, limited professional skills, severe employment problem and so on. Unlike reconstruction of the old city town and urban renewal in overseas, the occurrence of "villages within the city" in China has complex historical and realistic reasons. Compared with other urban built-up area,"villages within the city" exist a comparatively large disparity such as economic and social development and so on. All of these have severe influence on the wholly healthy and sustainable development of the city. Under the backgrounds of global economic recession, provocative conflicts, the widened gap between the rich and the poor, promoting the reconstruction of "villages within the city" smoothly and solving the difficulties in the process urbanization have a very important strategic meaning for maintaining social harmony and stability in China and improving comprehensive competitive strength of the city.This thesis tries to, on the basis of theoretical study, analyze the issue of "villages within the city" systematically. Moreover, the thesis will provide more useful reference for governments at all levels in order to make more reasonable and scientific policies of reconstruction and management of "villages within the city" issue. This thesis is divided into five parts. Introduction part begins with both domestic and overseas researches analyzing the meaning and types of "villages within the city" and makes brief description of the theories of the reconstruction of "villages within the city". The second part put emphasis on the reasons of occurrence of "villages within the city", the existing main problems and difficulties of reconstruction and administration. The third part mainly introduces some typical examples of overseas urban renewal and domestic reconstruction of "villages within the city". The fourth part summarizes the general situation of "villages within the city" in Tianjin city. We will analyze the concrete measures in the case study of the reconstruction of "villages within the city" in Xiqing District. The fifth part proposes the principles and suggestions of prompting the reconstruction of villages with the city in China.
