Research On Northeast Asian Timber Trade Based On The Comparative Advantage

The obvious advantages of Northeast Asian geopolitical between countries, strong economic strength, the rapid development of timber trade, which makes Northeast Asian occupy an important position in world timber trade market.With the dwindling forest resources, the attention on the environment is increasing in the world; the major timber exporting countries in the world will gradually stringent controls on the output of timber resources. How to promote the sustainable development of regional timber competitive industries,the optimization and upgrading of the regional timber competitive industries, to ensure the safety of the stability of the regional timber trade and timber industry has become an important issue needs to be resolved for the countries of the Northeast Asia region.In this paper, the theoretical bases of the research are the theory of comparative advantage, factor endowments and industrial theory of competitive advantage.First, qualitative and quantitative analysis of the Northeast Asian timber trade structure, trade status, and change of trade and problems of (mainly referring to logs, sawn timber, and wood-based panel). Second, respectively use of the revealed comparative advantage index, trade competitiveness index, trade competitiveness of the market share of these three methods to analysis of the comparative advantages of the Northeast Asian logs, sawn timber,pilwood.At the same time, in order to optimize and upgrade the structure of the regional timber industry and to promote the timber industry, research on the relevant factors of the elements of regional trade in timber resources, timber market demand, general economic conditions, industry scale of development, tariffs and ect.On the basis of the study, in order to ensure the safety of China’s timber industry with reference to the theory of Porter’s diamond model, put forward China should actively change the development pattern of China’s timber industry, timber industry safety early warning mechanism acoording to the new situation for the Northeast Asian timber trade.At the end of the article, put forward the targeted improvement strategies and development proposals against the problems exist for the Northeast Asian timber trade and the impact of regional trade in timber-related factors in order to further promote the development of the timber trade in Northeast Asia, and put forward on the scientific outlook prospects for the development of regional timber trade.The results show that:1.The timber trade of Northeast Asian countries is in highly complementary, and trade situation is good. Russia is the largest timber-exporting countries in the world, its logs exported to China, Japan and South Korea. China is the world’s wood-based panel’s export, its plywood exported to Japan and South Korea in huge number.2. The comparative advantage of Russian logs, sawn timber in the area is significant, trade competitiveness is strong. The comparative advantage of China’s plywood, fiberboard is significant, trade competitiveness is srong, and particleboard is in comparative disadvantage.3. China’s dependence on foreign trade of wood is high, and timber security risk exists. China should broaden the channels for wood supply, increase the timber self-sufficiency and develop outside the forest resource base; security early warning mechanism should be established.4. Although the export number of Russian logs, sawn timber is huge, Industry relatively advantages is obvious.Russia’s domestic forestry enterprises lack of timber harvesting, deep processing of timber strength is not enough, which greatly limit the further development of the regional timber trade. Economic and trade cooperation of regional multinational timber processing areas should be increased.5. Chinese wood-based panels’ high dependence on foreign trade, lack of independent brands, continued to take the OEM-style labor-intensive industries, wood-based panels industry,which limit the enhance of its competitiveness. China should change its forest products foreign trade patterns, along with ensuring the trade competitiveness of China’s timber competitive industries; push forward the upgrading of China’s timber industry.6. Along with Russia’s accession to the WTO, its tariffs on log exports will be reduced, China’s economy continued to be strength, Japan and South Korea’s economic rebound, Northeast Asian timber market demand will be huge and broad prospects for development of timber trade in Northeast Asia.
