Institutions of higher learning are the core birthplace of the science and technology and it plays an increasing important role in the country’s innovation work. In order to fully reflect the level of scientific research in colleges and universities and enhance innovation capacity, it is necessary to mobilize the creativity and enthusiasm of the researchers, to coordinate all available resources. Research team is different from research group and the R&D team. It has its own characteristics:more innovative and forward-looking are concluded in the output of the research team; research team has the dual purpose of academic research and personnel training; In research team, team members have equal relations and the formal authority are relatively weak. When successful research team innovations are learned and analyzed, social networks among research team are rarely been studied.In this paper, social network theory and team theory are combined. Leader’s social network of university research team, leader-member exchange and team performance were studied in a team level. First of all, the basic theory, dimensions and measurement of leader’s social network, leader-member exchange and team performance were summarized. Afterwards, research of three variables is summarized, which can pave the way to the following research. Then, in the view of internal and external networks, the relationship of team leader’s network and team performance was analyzed. Internal and external social networks include friendship network, consulting network, and the network of cooperation. Internal team network was measured by network strength and external team network was measured by network degrees. Finally, the model of "team leader’s social network-leader-member exchange-team performance" was established. To use SPSS16.0’s multiple linear regression analysis to verify the relationship of three variables.The empirical results show that:the internal degrees of centrality of the research team leader have a significant positive impact on team effectiveness; The contribution dimension and professional respect dimension of leader-member exchange have a have a significant positive impact on team effectiveness; The internal degree centrality of team leader has a significant positive impact on the contribution and professional respect; leader-member exchange plays an intermediary role in the relationship of the internal degrees of centrality of research team leader and team effectiveness.
