Science Communication Of National Science Foundation

National Science Foundation(NSF) is a federal agency supporting basic research in America. Beside providing funding to basic science research projects, it also promote science communication via various channels.According to the possible scale of impact, the content of NSF’s science communication can be devided into macro-information, medium-scale information and micro-information. NSF communicates science with other federal agencies, science researchers, enterprises and the general public through performance report, NSF website(www.nsf.gov), new form of media, news media and multiple types of science activities. The mechanism of NSF includes:1) federal policy that encourages NSF’s communication;2) communication organization, which is NSF’s organizational structure and regulations;3) communication ways, which can be divided into cooperation among colleges, universities and R&D segments, forms of formal education in schools and combination of different kinds of media.NSF’s science communication gives a big push to the social development in different ways, including enhancing science and technology, cultivating talents and raising the public awareness of science. The NSF’s science communication present a good example for institutions of the same kind to communicate science, from the angles of encouraging the public and R&D workers to participate, adopting diversified communication means, improving outside communication environment and inside organizational structure. Compared to NSF, NSFC is not doing enough on science communication. It does not put much emphasis on science communication as NSF; the NSFC regulations of science communication is not systematised; the content and means of NSFC science communication are quite restricted to catering certain groups instead of facing the general public. Considering the referrence of NSF’s science communication and the actual environment in China, the strategies for NSFC’ s science communication include setting up NSFC communication regulations, integrating strength from different parties, setting science projects in universities to combine science research and science education, diversifying the use of various communication means.
