With the rapid development of economic globalization and modern informationtechnology, logistics industry is on the rise worldwide and has rapidly become one ofthe three major sunrise industries along with the high-tech and financial industry. Asthe most dynamic and promising emerging service sector in the developing nationaleconomy, the development of modern logistics industry directly contributes to theoverall transaction costs and efficiency of a country or a region. Therefore, thecompetitive advantage of modern logistics industry is an important indicator tomeasure a country or a region’s economic competitiveness.Upon theoretical analysis, the thesis firstly expounds the modern logistics theoryand the theory of competitive advantage, defines the concept of modern logistics,introduces its characteristics and functions, and analyzes emphatically severalclassical Western theories of competitive advantage. Next, it studies the status quo ofmodern logistics industry in Zhejiang province from three aspects: its developmentindices, external environment and the current situation of enterprises. By drawingreference form Harvard University Professor Michael Porter’s "diamond" model ofnational competitive advantage, it also elaborates on the competitive advantage of themodern logistics industry in Zhejiang Province from six aspects, including production factors, demand conditions, related industries and supporting industries,the structure of corporate strategy and intra-industry competition, opportunities andthe government. Then, it points out the problems hindering the development ofmodern logistics industry in Zhejiang Province, and put forward appropriatecountermeasures and proposals to enhance its competitive advantage, includingaccelerating the shift in concept of logistics of the society as a whole, the governmentcontinuing to create a favorable policy environment and external environment, givinglogistics industry as much support as the industry, promoting informatization oflogistics and encouraging enterprises to introduce the idea of modern logisticsmanagement, cultivating logistic personnel and improving the overall quality andlevel of the logistics industry. Finally, it summarizes the paper and presents a furtheroutlook.
