In today’s increasingly market competitive environment, business process with simple, flexible and high-efficiency properties plays a key role in which an enterprise can be outstanding and grow rapidly in a sustainable manner. Meanwhile, the analysis and monitoring of the workflow complexity can also help the managers to have a clear picture of the logical relationship between various kinds of enterprise essentials and their distribution, thus let the managers optimize the complex process model which is incompatible with the enterprise capability and the external environment. The research of workflow complexity rises under this background. Especially for the role-oriented workflow complexity, it can break through the limitations of the traditional control flow based complexity factors and evaluate the workflow complexity more completely and flexibly. In order to discuss the effective way of the role-oriented workflow complexity evaluation, firstly, the role-oriented workflow model and the mapping between the process elements are defined. Then, on the basis of the resource utilization patterns and the resource-activity-role relation chain, the interactions between roles are discussed and the concept of critical roles is proposed. By integrating the role compatibility and critical factors, together with the role interaction frequency implied in workflow logs, a role-compatibility based method for workflow complexity evaluation is introduced. Furthermore, the dynamic efficiency perspective is imported into the workflow complexity evaluation. Based on the definition of resource turnover modes of role, the transformation mechanism of virtual resource value is designed. Then, the resource turnover rate and resource transformation efficiency are proposed, which present the ability and the efficiency of resource utilization of roles respectively. By integrating the resource transformation efficiency factor and the role-compatibility based workflow complexity factor, an extended and more powerful workflow complexity evaluation method is further introduced. The case study is also presented. Finally, unresolved issues in the paper are summarized, and the follow-up studies are discussed.
