As the world increasingly accepts the mindset with the term "globalization," the culture surrounding the idea of "globalization" has evolved into a brand new pathway. The unique characteristics of China’s mainland local culture has become increasingly more vital and crucial. At this time, the Chinese tourism industry is challenged by the tourists’ needs of wanting to get close to the original culture belonging to the local place as much as possible. Therefore, the role of its local residents should be paid much attention to. On one hand, the friendly attitudes of its local residents to travelers are important. On the other hand, local residents are the ones who should be creating their own local culture, and the key elements on the "localization" of their hometown in our "globalization" time. A research on the role of local residents in tourism development has based the theory on reconstructing the local place and social relationship sociologically. This thesis chose Pingyao as the object by analyzing documents, observing in real circumstances, and interviewing the people in an attempt to investigate the condition of tourism development in Pingyao. Further, Pingyao’s residents’willingness and attitudes towards local tourism are also the key points in this thesis. The questions serving the interview are as follows:1) Local residents’acknowledgement towards their community and local culture,2) Local residents’serving attitudes towards their travelers,3) Local residents’ acknowledgement, attitudes, and participation towards new types of culture, and4) Local residents’ attitudes towards learning about art and culture. By analyzing the results of interviews, some conclusions could be reached:1) Pingyao’s residents have high acknowledgements of their hometown,2) Pingyao’s residents are willing to serve tourists from outside and are welcoming,3) Pingyao’s residents have little knowledge of new types of culture, and4) Under the pressures of income, Pingyao’s residents tend to have little willingness to learn about art and how to serve travelers in a better way. To summarize, we could figure out Pingyao has been heavily influenced by Confucianism until today. However, the willingness to develop the local economy today dominates Pingyao’s residents, in which may result in their residents to participate more into shaping their local culture if they were encouraged economically.Given this type of setting, this thesis argues that it is not only the government’s job to encourage local participation through financing, but also it is more important to educate all native and local residents of historical locations to develope a sense of ownership towards their naitive land, and to provide the necessary cultural and educational resources to those people.
