A cultural route is a land, water, mixed or other type of rotes, which is physically determined and characterized by having its own specific and historic dynamics and functionality; showing interactive movement of people as well as multi-dimensional, continuous and reciprocal exchanges of goods, ideas, knowledge and values within or between countries and regions over significant periods of time. These types of routes generate a cross-fertilization of the cultural in space and time, which is reflected both in its tangible and intangible heritageThere are currently 628 world cultural heritage sites, including different types of monuments, historical sites and building complexes that reflect the full spectrum of our world's historical and cultural treasures. Most of the listed items are static and unitary, on the other hand, cultural routes are a dynamic one that links heritage sites of different regions and forms and embraces the protection of both tangible and intangible heritage. Both cultural and natural landscape, cultural route can enrich the concept of world heritage. From the trend of the development of World Cultural Heritage, the first chapter of this thesis reviews the background of cultural routes conception and the establishment, status and goal of CIIC. After the brief introduction of cultural routes which have been listed in WHL, according the abundance of foreign language data translation, this thesis summarizes the latest theories of cultural routes such as Control of the territory, Interpretation and information system, The Three Dimensions Of Space, Time and Cognition, The definition of the setting protection measures For cultural routes. The second chapter titled "Present Study of Chinese Cultural Heritage Routes" being with the status and protection of The Silk Road and The Giant Canal which have been listed in , and summarizes the cultural routes related study in China. The chapter then analyzed the misunderstanding which existed in the cultural routes study in China such as "cultural routes is cultural landscape", "cultural routes is line_typed cultural landscape", "cultural routes is serial heritage", "cultural routes is corridor heritage", "the application of cultural routes must be multinational" in accordance with the latest study of the world cultural routes. The chapter finally expounds the significance of Chinese cultural routes studies, and partially affirmed that the protection, application and tourism development of Chinese cultural routes. At the same time there is still big gap in management level between Chinese cultural routes and then in the rest of the world. The guidance theory of this thesis is world cultural routes, and the study case is The Ancient Road of Tea and Horse. Because of it's significance. Compare with - Giant Canal, the ANCIENT ROAD OF TEA AND HORSE is more grass_rooted, and had spontaneously formed in accordance with the need of Zang and Han people. Compared with The Silk Road, the trade content of ANCIENT ROAD OF TEA AND HORSE is mainly satisfied with people's daily need but not the extravagant goods usually destined for kings or nobleman. And compared with the plank road built along a cliff between Sichan and Shannxi, the ANCIENT ROAD OF TEA AND HORSE is more international, but not a militarily sense. There three reasons for choosing the part of Yunnan to Tibet of The ANCIENT ROAD OF TEA AND HORSE (from the start point Dali, Lijiang, Zhongdian, Deqin, Mangkang and Changdu): firstly, the ANCIENT ROAD OF TEA AND HORSE is tremendously huge and complicated, it consisted of three parts, the line from Sichuan to Tibet, the line from Yunnan to Tibet and the line from Qinghai to Tibet. Additionally each line has many branches, and, each branch contains its own sub-cultural and customs. So it is advisable to choice one of them to study under the limited scope of this essay. Secondly, the Yunnan to Tibet line has an obviously different tourism development, that is to say, from the west is still developing tourism area. So this line supply the most intriguing sample to study due to its integrity of cultural routes which need to be satisfied. Thirdly, the Yunnan to Tibet line was studied more early than others, it is very helpful to collect the date, and to save time and energy. The third chapter explains that the key reason why the Ancient Tea and Horse Road have been producing abundance tangible and intangible heritages is due to the control of territory between the authority of nationality of minority groups (including Bai, Naxi and Zang ), central government, and the foreign power. The heritage value of the Ancient Tea and Horse Road, a road located on high terrain and difficult to pass is that it connected the Han and Zang, and then consolidated the affiliation relationship of Tibet and the central government, making the communication of different nationalities in the Southwest stronger, not to forming a tremendous cultural heritage.According the data from the field work, the forth chapter analyzes the tourism development and heritage protection, tourism market using the cultural heritage protection of related countries, raised detailed solutions on the establishment of heritage area protection and the anticipation of local community and building-up of landscape system. Finally, this essay gives the model of tourism development of Ancient Tea and Horse RoadThe issue of Ancient Tea and Horse Road becoming a world heritage site is still unresolved (both in China and the world). The conclusion of this thesis studies the application of the Ancient Tea and Horse Road as World heritage.
