3D laser scanning technology is a brand-new surveying and mapping technology whichcan acquisite data for some object all-directionally, inside and out, and contact freely. And it iswidely applied to lots of industries more than before. The ancient architectural buildings canbe surveyed and mapped remotely, and contact free of the3D laser scanners, which would dolittle harm to the buildings during the process of the buildings’ conservation.3D laserscanning technology is now being given more and more attention on the conservation ofancient buildings. It is first presented in the paper the current state of the research on the3D laser scanningtechnology at home and abroad, the grim situation of the much disease and great damage ofthe ancient buildings. And then it is described the details of surveying and mapping of theancient buildings, the specialities, and the colored drawing patterns on the buildings. Theapplication direction of3D laser scanning technology is then referred in the paper. This paper describes in detail the demands and methods in ancient architecturalbuildings’data acquisitionduring3D laser scanning field process, then comes up with specificdata acquisition methods and accuracy demands of three-dimensional data and imageacquisition during field process in ancient architectural buildings’ colored drawing scanning. Then this paper makes compare among various methods of point clouds data registration ofancient buildings and proposes a method which is to adjust with different scene sizes whenregistering data. The author also refers thatsurveyors who map ancient architecturalbuildingscan draw sheetsby hand with the assistant of point clouds’ section, and at the sametime make analysis of ancient architectural buildings’ overall deformation, beam frames’deformation, columns’deformation and walls’deformation. This paper also describes in detailthe process of colored drawings’ data acquisitiononancient architectural buildings’. The process can be done by a multi-parameter dataacquisition system for articulated arm CMM which can acquisite image data basing on theidea of color managing. The surveyors construct highly accurate triangulation network modelswith the data which is scanned and acquisited by the articulated arm CMM and then draw theortho-photo map of colored drawing comparing with the native photos. Then we can makeresearch on atlas of colored drawing and the ancient buildings’ diseases basing on the modelsand ortho-photo maps above. The paper tells that one can establish three-dimensional datamanagement system on the basis of ancient architectural buildings’three-dimensional models, and make centralized management with two-dimensional information and three-dimensionalinformation intensively so as to look data information up and make disease monitoring toancient architectural buildings.Owing to its own characteristic and advantage,3D laser scanning technology will beused more and more widely and deeply in the field of ancient architectural buildings survey.
