There are many advantages of manhole cover made of unsaturated polyester,including high strength, compact structure, simple process, which are idealalternative products to the existing covers. This experiment selected unsaturatedpolyester resin as matrix, glass fiber mat and glass fiber cloth as reinforcedmaterials, fly ash, calcium carbonate or silica as filler. After preparation ofcomposite material, we made composite bending tests, impact strength tests,chemical resistance test, the influence of diluents on the curing time, and analysedthe microstructure of the composite by SEM.Then we comprehensive characteredthe performance of the products.The results of flexural strength showed, when the content of the glass fiber wasbelow60%, the flexural strength of the composite materials would increase with thecontent of glass fiber volume. For the material reinforced by glass fiber mat, whenthe content of the glass fiber was60%, the flexural strength for185.78MPa, whenit was30%,the flexural strength for148.36MPa. For the unsaturated polyestercomposite material of reinforced by glass fiber cloth, when the content of the glassfiber was60%, the flexural strength for210.57MPa, when it was30%, the flexuralstrength for160.34MPa.The results of the impact strength showed, when the content of the glass fiber wasbelow50%, the impact strength of composite material would increase with thecontent of fiber,when it was50%, the impact strength of the composite materialboth reached maximum, including the impact strength of the composites reinforcedby glass fiber cloth for85.61kJ/m2,while the impact strength of reinforced by glassfiber mat composites for76.47kJ/m2,which showed that the toughness of thematerial reinforced by glass fiber both was more excellent.The results of the chemical resistance of the composite showed that the corrosionresistance of the material on the water, the acidic medium, alkaline medium wasmuch better than the standard of national. At the same time, after adding filler, thematerials resistant to medium capacity was not significantly lower.The results of SEM showed, with the increase of the filled, the interfacecombination performance of resin, fiber and filled down gradually. When thedosage of the filled was50%, the interface combination performance of the calciumcarbonate and silica was superior to fill by the fly ash.
