We can obtain many products with different properties by modifying hydroxyethylcellulose, and graft modification is a hot research in these modified methods. The method cannot only maintain the original advantages of cellulose is not destroyed, but also can make thecellulose generate some new performances. In this study, graft copolymerization ofacrylamide(AM) and dimethyldiallylammonium chloride(DMDAAC) onto hydroxyethylcellulose(HEC) was investigated, and the conditioning capability of self-made product forhair care was studied when it was added to the shampoo.In the experiment, the first step was to select a valid initiator. The ammonium persulfatewas better for the reaction by comparing the effect of ceric ammonium nitrate、ammoniumpersulfate、hydrogen peroxide-ferrous sulfate on grafting efficiency and cationic degree. Thenterpolymer(HEC-co-AM-co-DMDAAC) was synthesized with ammonium persulfate asinitiator, using HEC、AM and DMDAAC as raw materials by aqueous solution radicalpolymerization. The best synthesis conditions were optimized as follows: the amount ofinitiator is12mmol·L-1、reaction temperature is70℃、m(HEC):m(AM) is1:1.2、m(AM):m(DMDAAC) is1:3、reaction time is4hours. Viscosity average molecular weight ofraw material HEC and product were measured by ubbelohde viscometer, and their Weightaverage molecular weight were measured by static light scattering, the result shows thatweight of product is bigger than the raw material HEC. In order to understand more about thenature of the product, its aqueous nature was also studied by us. The result shows that both ofviscosity of HEC and product become lower when the speed increases or temperature rises.The surface tension of the product is lower than HEC, it can be maintained between55to56mN/m. Critical association concentration of the product was measured at1.8mg/mL by usingfluorescence spectroscopy. The product has good compatibility with the surfactants that usedcommonly in shamoo at a certain concentration range.The optimum amount of self-made product in shampoo is0.4%through the wet and drycombing testing. The wet and dry combing properties of products with different cationicdegree were compared, the result shows that wet and dry combing conditioning capability isgetting better as the cationic degree of product increases. The comprehensive function ofproduct in shampoo was compared with three samples. The result shows that the self-madeproduct has better performance than domestic product and can compete with foreign products,but it should be improved in terms of foam stability. Overall, the self-made product has goodmarket prospects.
