In this paper,arabinoxylans extracted from corn bran were modified into amphiphilic cationic arabinoxylans which were then applied in shampoos.Alkali-extractable arabinoxylans?AEAX?were extracted from corn bran and wheat bran.AEAX was then fractionated by precipitating with 60% ethanol to obtain the AEAX-F60.The monosaccharide composition and molecular weight distribution of AEAX-60 were invesitgated.Furthermore,moisturizing and antioxidation properties of AEAX-60 were studied.It was found AEAX-F60 had moderate moisturizing performance and antioxidant ability.Amphiphilic cationic arabinoxylans were synthesized by one-pot procedure with tertiary amine,epichlorohydrin and AEAX-F60 under alkaline condition.Cx-CAX?x= 2,4,6?with different alkyl chain lengths was obtained by changing the chain length of tertiary amine.The effect of reaction conditions on the degree of substitution?DS?was studied by using C4-CAX as an example.The maximum DS which was 0.146 was obtained under the conditions of n?NaOH?: n?AEAX-F60?= 0.5,45 ? and 8 h.The structure of product was characterized by FT-IR,1H NMR and 13 C NMR.The solution behavior of Cx-CAX was investigated.With the increasing of DS of C4-CAX,the critical aggregation concentration had no significant change but the hydrodynamic radius of aggregates and the solution viscosity increased.With the alkly chain length increasing,the critical aggregation concentration decreased,but the hydrodynamic radius of the aggregates and the solution viscosity increased.Compared to DS,alkly chain length had stronger effect on Cx-CAX solution behavior.Anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate(K12)was choiced as a model molecule for primary surfactant in shampoo to study the interaction of amphiphilic cationic arabinoxylans with anionic surfactant.When K12 content was low,negative charge of K12 could not neutralize completely the positive charge of Cx-CAX and the excess positive charge of Cx-CAX stabilized the system,therefore the system was transparent.With the increasing of K12 concentration,positive charge of Cx-CAX and negative charge of K12 were completely neutralized,association was formed and then phase separation happened.With the concentration of K12 increasing continuously,the excess K12 could dissolve the aggregates and the system became transparent again.Amphiphilic cationic arabinoxylan was used as a conditioning agent in the formula of shampoo.C4-CAX exhibited a good property of formulation.The influence of DS and chain length on the properties of shampoo was studied.With the increasing of DS and chain length,foam property of shampoo had no significant change but viscosity and stability of shampoo,and the hair combing ability increased.It was found that with the increasing of DS and chain length,the absorption amount of Cx-CAX on hair increased and helping silicone deposit onto hair surface more efficient.
