Gear mechanism is the most basic and widely used mechanical drive. Face geardrive is a new type of gear drives with meshing cylindrical gear and bevel gear. Ithas attracted widespread attention because of its superior driving performance andpotential applications. The theoretical study of face gear drive proved its advantagesafter application. Because of processing technology limitations, many theories havenot been tested in practice. Research on gear processing method promotes the facegear test and its practical application.In this paper, the orthogonal face gear is treated as the research object. Thegeometry principle of face gear drive is studied, the mathematical model is built,this model is analyzed to determine the geometry of the face gear, and thethree-dimensional model of face gear is established.Based on a brief introduction to several common worm structures of hobs,tooth surface equation of the hob base worm is given. With processing, coordinatesof hob enveloping face gear is established and Coordinate transformation matrix isderived. Envelopment and sport method are used to derive meshing equation of thehob machining face gears. Tooth surface equation of the face gear is achieved andsimulated this tooth surface by Matlab. With the analysis of the tooth, the conditionof undercutting is studied and the undercut boundary line is obtained. Thepreliminary modification for face gear hob is operated based on the boundary line.Finally, referred to conventional gear hobbing process, movement of hobbingface gear is analyzed. The influence of parameters of face gear hob, such as toothtop and root fillet radius, hob diameter, length, flute, front angle, behind angle etc.,to processing performance is analyzed. The structure parameter of hob based ongiven initial parameters is designed. An apparatus for grinding face gear wasdesigned.
