Cutting-tool geometric parameter measuring instrument is essential for cutting-tooldevelopment and manufacture. In recent years, image process technology is wide used incutting-tool measuring instrument with favorable performance-to-price ratio. The cutting-tooltechnology research institute of Dalian Polytechnic University has developed an imageprocessing based cutting-tool geometry measurement apparatus. Engineering practicesverified that it is particularly suitable in machine shop applications. But there is no anerroneous standard for examination so that whether the products are qualified is unknown andbrings the difficulty to the next sharpening.Error calibration is a necessary link of measuring instruments’ test but now there are nostandards for the calibration of image processing based cutting-tool measuring instrument.The works of this topic are calibration the instrument and determine the error, thencompensate the error by its application software so that decrease the instrument’s errors. Thispaper describes the design of calibration method, hardware components and adjustment andthe preparation of the software.Take the DJCLY92B image processing based cutting-tool measuring instrument forexample in the actual work. Using a glass plate with scales marked of laser as the standard,and calibrating the instrument several times so that reduces the random errors. Thencompensate the errors and redo the calibration thus define the accuracy of the instrument byanalyzing the measurement uncertainty:±0.002mm(20℃,50mm).Test results show that designs of both hardware and software achieve the target. With thecalibration and compensation errors of the instrument become stable fluctuation fromincreasing linearly. So the product’s accuracy improves and is ready for upgrade.
