According to the situation that price of cotton is growing and supply is not adequate to the demand, but PET’s supply is surplus with low value-added, the idea that modified polyester imitated cotton came to people’s mind. One-step POY/FDY differential-shrinkage combined yarns have excellent performance, and were widely used in the development of simulation products. But they were rarely developed in the imitation cotton products, so have a wide market prdspect. In this paper, modified copolyester with the third monomer SIPE, the fourth monomer1,2-PDO was used as the main raw material for imitating cotton. The structure and properties of the synthesized samples were characterized via NMR spectroscopy, Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). All the yarns were spun on one-step producing equipment of POY/FDY differential-shrinkage combined yarns. Selected appropriate spinning temperatures and used various drawing ratio to discuss the relationship between processing and fiber properties. At the same time, this paper analysed the relationship between cotton-like polyester one-step POY/FDY differential shrinkage combined yarn and its two components, and spun three kinds of cotton-like polyester one-step POY/FDY differential shrinkage combined yarns with different material combinations. Yarns’ performances were compared with cotton fiber. Selected one of these combined yarns to weave, woven structures were plain weave and1/2twill. Then alkali deweighting was used in fabrics, evaluated the fabrics in heat-moisture comfort, drapability and gloss. The results were as follows:1. The result of NMR and FT-IR showed that there were several major feature peaks showed on the spectrogram. The proportion of the third monomer SIPE, the fourth monomer1,2-PDO was almost the same with the proportion of SIPE and1,2-PDO by NMR spectroscopy. The result of DSC showed that the melting point Tm reduced evidently. After crystallization and drying, the glass transition region became to be less obvious, cold crystallization peak leaned to the left, and melting peak broadened.2. The copolyester showed good spinnability when the spinning temperature was during280℃~283℃. With the increasing of drawing ratio, both crystallinity and orientation degree increased, breaking tenacity and initial modulus raised, breaking elongation and boiling water shrinkage decreased. Performance of cotton-like polyester one-step POY/FDY differential shrinkage combined yam was the result of the comprehensive function between POY and FDY, so its aggregation structure and physical properties were between POY’s and FDY’s.3. After dealing with the boiling water, the effect of different shrinkage made yarn fluffy, ang had cotton feeling, imitated cotton from appearance. The mechanical properties got lower than polyester fiber, but were almost with cotton. At the same time, these yarns had higher elongation and bigger initial modulus, so softness was more excellent than cotton. The moisture regain of three combined yarns with different material combinations was twice of polyester’s, and have better hydrophilic performance.4. Compared with cotton fabric, the fabrics made of One-step POY/FDY differential-shrinkage combined yarns, the fabrics’ permeability, moisture-penetrability, drape, quick-drying property that made of cotton-like polyester one-step POY/FDY differential shrinkage combined yarns were better than cotton fabric. But there were same differences in heat retention, wicking, warm-cool feeling and gloss. After alkali deweighting, the properties were improved, gloss, warm-cool feeling etc. were closer to cotton fabric.
