In recent years, the rapid development of the petroleum refining, petrochemical and chemical industry, energy issues have become increasingly prominent, which greatly promoted the research in the field of domestic distillation. Packed tower is one of the important equipment for chemical separation process. It has the advantages of a large capacity, high separation efficiency, pressure drop, small liquid holdup and operating flexibility, etc. The applications of packed column technology fully reflect the obvious advantage in the yield, such as energy conservation, improving product quality, improving the environment and optimizing the investment, etc.Packed tower design requires high mass transfer efficiency, low pressure drop and wide operating range. Therefore, studying the hydrodynamic parameters, to design a packed tower simulation software which can efficiently and accurately calculate the hydrodynamic parameters such as pressure drop, mass transfer efficiency, and suitable operating area (load performance chart), has important theoretical and practical significance.The hydrodynamic model, and some other calculation model of parameters of packed tower, which include the calculation of pan-point gas velocity, packing layer pressure drop, liquid holdup, HETP, and tower diameter were researched. The drawing method of load performance chart of the packed tower was studied. The Microsoft Visual Basic6.0was used to develop the design software of structured packing tower for Silk Screen Ripple, Board Ripple, Mellapak, Gempak, Montz-pak, Impulse Packing, Perform Grid, etc. and the design and rating software of random packing tower for Raschig Ring, Pall Ring, Cascade Mini Ring, Berl Saddle, Intalox Saddle, Intalox Metal Tower Packing, Nutter Ring, Teller Rosette, etc. The speed and accuracy calculation of the chosen mathematical model was considered, and the regression calculation was done for the corresponding model. In this paper, the average relative error of the loaded point line fitting formula is0.3152%, and the flooding line fitting formula’s average relative error is0.7687%, the maximum relative error is-4.9529%. The lines of pressure drop correlation chart were segmented fitted, and the relative errors do not exceed1%. The datas agree well, and the fitting formulas are accurate and reliable. In this paper, the development process of the design and rating software of packed tower was introduced through the metal Cascade ring and Intalox metal ring saddle, and two instances were calculated as the software’s examination and evaluation. The results show that the software’s calculation values agree well with literature values. The minimum relative error is0.0071%, and the maximum relative error is-8.6162%, the software calculates accurate and reliable. In addition, the operating flexibility was vividly and visually showed through the packed tower performance chart. The corresponding improvement suggestion was calculated and recommended by studying which provides a reference for the design calculation of packed tower.
