While China’s rapid urbanization in recent years promotes economic and social development, a series of "urban diseases" including ecological environment destruction, urban land shortage and traffic jam, ect., have caused. To a larger extent, China takes the road of an extensive economic growth mode and excessive dependence on resource and energy consumption, thus, under the constraints of population, environment and resource, China’s development encounters its "bottleneck". The Scientific Outlook on Development is put forward to change China’s development model, pursue a high growth, low consumption and sustainable economic growth path, and achieve the balance between economic and social development and ecological environment. Under this context, the concept of ecological civilization comes into people’s mind to guide their practice, ecological city becomes a new choice of city development, and ecological city construction becomes the trend of the21st century city development.Based on related theory and calculation method of ecological footprint model, we calculated the ecological footprint and ecological deficit of Changsha city from2007to2011. With the result, in combination with the measurement and evaluation for the sustainable development status and the degree of the ecological city construction of the Changsha city, we can predict its ecological footprint change from2012to2016by utilizing a linear regression model. Therefore, a scientific basis can be provided for the ecological city construction and From the calculation and analysis for the ecological footprint of the Changsha city from2007-2011, the following are the obtained indications:1. There is a year-by-year increasing tendency of the per capita ecological footprint of the Changsha city from2007to2011, from1.298hm2in2007to1.359hm2in2011, an increasement of4.7percent in five years. However, such increasement is largely attributed to the increasing of total biological resources consumed by the residents, with per capita ecological footprint of the residents’biological resources accounting for more than80percent of the total ecological footprint.2. There is an increasing tendency of the per capita ecological carrying ability of the Changsha city from2007to2011as a whole, albeit at a low rate, from0.566hm2in2007to0.572hm2in2011, an increasement of1.06percent in five years. That is related to not only the constantly improving levels in science and technology and productivity, but also the larger land yield factor due to improved agricultural productivity.3. There is an increasing tendency of the ecological deficit of the Changsha city from2007to2011as a whole, indicating the imbalance of its ecological footprint in demand and supply and the insufficiency of the ecological carrying ability for meeting the ecological requirements. Its ecological deficit increases from0.732hm2in2007to0.787hm2in2011, an increasement of7.51percent in five years, showing that the ecological environment of the Changsha city has to be further improved. There is a real need for the ecological city construction of the Changsha in order to create an excellent ecological environment for the ecological city construction. 4. There is a year-by-year decreasing tendency of the ecological footprint of GDP(ten thousands Yuan) of the Changsha city from2007to2011, from0.378hm2/ten thousands Yuan in2007to0.159hm2/ten thousands Yuan in2011, a decreasing of19.2percent in five years. The result shows that the diversification of ecological footprint of the Changsha city increases, the resource utilization efficiency is improved, and the sustainability of development is enhanced.5. The predict for the ecological footprint change of the Changsha city from2012to2016by utilizing the linear regression model indicates that there will be an increasing tendency of the per capita ecological footprint of the Changsha city from2012to2016, exceeding1.4hm2in2016, while the per capita ecological carrying ability is less increased, thereby widening its per capita ecological deficit to an extent of possibly exceeding1hm2in2016.
