The necessity to reduce greenhouse gases emission produced by energy buildingconsumptions and to cut the energy bill (mainly due to the use of fossil sources) leadsto the employment of renewable energy sources in new planned scenarios. Inparticular, more and more often municipal energy and environmental plans pay greatattention to the possibilities of employment of the solar technologies at urban scale.Due to the progress in the field of solar cells the widespread use of photovoltaicsystems in the urban areas appears to have a significant breakthrough. The energysupply will be challenged with high urban photovoltaic consumers. Solar photovoltaic(PV) system is, by far, the most suitable tools to be utilized in urban areas. Obviously, the proper adoption of such systems in buildings does call for the availability ofcalculation methods suitable to provide the actual level of exploitation of solar energyin urban residential buildings. In this paper, the urban residential BIPV applications has been studied from thepoint of view of the architectural design of appropriate design approach for theintegration of photovoltaic systems and urban residential. Modeling the representativeTianjin urban residential buildings and counting the annual electricity consumption.According to the Tianjin area typical meteorological year data of solar radiation, aprocedure for evaluating the geographical energy potential of urban residentialbuilding exterior surfaces in urban areas is proposed; in particular, the amount ofsurface that could be used for the installation of systems able to capture solar radiationfor the energy production is investigated. We can draw a rough conclusion of thecapacity of BIPV in Tianjin residential buildings, regarding the different solar usingstatus in different planning and layout. Further, through the quantitative research andqualitative analysis, the potential of BIPV in different cities base on different designswill be found. It will be a reference to the BIPV design in residential buildings.
