Building low-carbon cities has become the common pursuit of the world. Aspart of the urban space, the planning and construction of residential areas haveconsiderable impact on the development of low-carbon cities. This thesis criticallyevaluates the residential area planning in hot summer cold winter areas, anddiscusses the applications of energy saving technologies in single buildings byemploying space syntax, questionnaire and literature review. Further, wit h a designpractice, this thesis discusses how to promote the development of low-carbon citiesthrough appropriate planning and construction of residential areas.First of all, the author analyzes the characteristics of residential areas withvarious spatial configurations. By employing the theorem of space syntax, quantitative analysis of spatial configuration has been conducted to study thefeatures of the networks of roads and streets and the derived spaces, which aims atdiscussing the rationality of future planning of residential areas. Second, questionnaire among sample residents in districts with five different businessmodes has been conducted, in order to investigate the travel time, travel mode, travel reachability and satisfactory degree of resid ents for various travel purposes.According to the statistics above, some suggestions have been provided by theauthor to optimize the low-carbon travelling for residents. Third, previousliteratures of the energy saving technologies have been reviewed and summarizedcritically. Fourth, a practice design of Wan Bo Yuan ecological residential districtin Huainan has been proposed in the thesis, which is based on the results ofprevious sections.Based on the studies above, some main findings are summarized andsuggestions about the residential districts in hot summer cold winter areas areprovided by the author. Hopefully, these claims and implications could guide thefuture planning and construction of residential areas and promotes the developmentof low carbon cities.
