The rural settlements are a significant part of rural land use. For a long period, the rural settlements have been created and developed in a spontaneous way with a considerable inadequacy of deliberate plan, construction and management, directly leading to the issue that the rural settlements spread out messily and domicile people with an extremely low density. In the upcoming period, these rural settlements are still the major form of rural residence. With the progress of the New Town Construction, urbanization and promoting the balancing of residential land and arable land, the demotion and annexation of rural settlements will to a large extent reduce the land use, improve the ecological environment and raise the life quality. So, how to build to reasonable spatial distribution is one complicated issue people are now facing. Thus, by conducting research involving the optimization of rural settlements we can come out with the optimal solution of in a calculated manner and to provide theoretical and practical foundation on general plan of land usage and rural spatial distribution. This paper studied the rural settlement spatial distribution optimization method and analyzed critical factors and made improvements to meet the requirement of optimization of rural settlements and then verified the study with the case of Zhulin Town, Jintan City. The major results are listed below.1) Summarized the factors of rural settlement comprehensive influence and those factors were categorized as internal factors that suggested the intrinsic feature of rural settlement and external factors that were bestowed by the social settlement. When evaluating the rural settlement comprehensive influence, both internal and external factors should be fully considered.2) Studied the division method on spatial object influence space and based on that, rural settlements spatial distribution optimization method was proposed utilizing the weighted voronoi diagram extended break-point model to provide the solution.3) Implemented the generative software for weighted voronoi diagram based on ArcEngine and C#to solve the problem that the current software cannot meet the specific requirement. Then compared these output results with those generated with other softwares.4) Performed a case study on Zhulin Town and validated the spatial distribution optimization method proposed in this paper.
