Research On The Protection And Renewal Of The Traditional Settlements In The Island Of Pingtan

The State Council officially approved "The overall development plan of PingtanComprehensive Experimental Zone"(we call it "the Plan" below) on November18th,2011.Thenthe State Council Information Office held a press conference about "the Plan" in the morning onFebruary14th,2012." The Plan " endued Pingtan more special and preferential policies thanthose Special Economic Zones. It was a major initiative of the Central Committee and the StateCouncil to promote the peaceful development of cross-strait relationships. And it was also ascarce opportunity for Pingtan`s development.Under the backgrounds of national policies and requirements of regional developments, Pingtannow undergoes the greatest urbanization in the process of its history．Irreversible modern tideswill inevitably strongly impact the original ecology of the traditional settlements in Pingtan.Thebooms of high-strength developments, especially those destructive exploits would drive thetraditional settlements to the last ditch. Large numbers of traditional stone resting settlements arenow facing the transformations from the long-existing traditional yielding lifestyles tomodernizations,which including the transformation of social structure, industrial structure, spaceconfiguration and even psychological level and so on. Therefore, the deference and the heritage tothe traditional characteristics and overall memory,together with the proper ways to deal with thedevelopments and protections of traditional settlements are urgent to be solved due to the fantasticspurts in Pingtan Island`s construction.The article based and researched systematically on theperspectives of Pingtan traditional settlements`protections and developments in the newera,trying to upgrade people`s concerns with the traditional settlements under the rapidurbanization.The aim was to protect and inherit the special regional culture,meanwhile, to offervaluable suggestions for protections and renewals of Pingtan traditional settlements.The article first reviewed and summarized in the reviews of relevant researchesdomestic and overseas, analyzing the defects and aspects to be improved comparedwith foreign countries. Secondly, analyzed the factors relevant to the formation andthe growth of traditional settlements in Pingtan, and pointed out that the specialenvironmental characteristics of Pingtan Island including geography, climate, culture,society and politics, economy and other aspects had profound impacts on spacial and residential styles of Pingtan traditional settlements; Thirdly, on the basis of theanalyses and the researches, the article pointed out the opportunities and challenges thatPingtan traditional settlements were facing, thought deeply about the surviving predicament. Atthe same time,it indicated that the aesthetic values and the research values of Pingtan traditionalsettlements would profoundly influence theirs existence and evolution. Finally, it analyzed thepractical cases on the protections and updates of the traditional settlements, summarizing andusing advanced protection systems and experiences for references, and put forward relevantcountermeasures on the protections and renewals of Pingtan traditional settlements.
