As Chinese traditional dwellings developed so far, the local settlement culture showsits strong vitality, on the other hand, it concludes an idea----existence is reasonable. Inface of nature, traditional dwellings showed humble qualities, which keeps them have agood living environment and ecological adaptability and also implies wisdom of thelaboring people. In long years, the traditional local-style dwelling houses form and naturalspace made balance. Unfortunately, as new technology and function needs appeared, thebalance broke. There are two issues in front of traditional dwellings, are they need to beprotected or seek for new development? Meanwhile, in the current situation of energycrisis, it means a lot for creating low energy cost building and natural friendly building tolearn experience and concept from ecology traditional dwellings.The traditional building forms in northwest desert region were chosen as study objectin this paper. These traditional buildings built in desert region which has huge day andnight temperature change, strong solar radiation and cold winter and hot summer. In spiteof different form and construction, for the view of building thermal physics, they allshowed good climate adaptability especially in building thermal environment part to thechange of external environment. To search these kinds of properties, using externalclimate parameter, building envelop thermal resistance and thermal storage and inertiaindex etc., the author deduced and calculated decay rates and delay time, inside andoutside of building’s envelope hourly temperature distribution value under influence ofexternal sol-air temperature and indoor thermal harmonic. Than evaluating indoorthermal environment using thermal adaptation model and energy consumption level using“Difference Value”.The results showed that the traditional dwellings researched in this paper havecommendable thermal stability for severe climate change due to major decay rates whichbuilding envelope structure take with good heat storage property. Although sol-airtemperature changed severely, inside of building envelope’s radiation temperaturebasically stay stable, which contribute a lot for maintaining indoor operation temperature.And it turns out that only use heating can dwellings have stable comfortable temperatureduring24h in winter and natural ventilation can obtain acceptable indoor thermalenvironment in summer. Comparing to light envelope structure building contentedthermal standard, traditional dwellings have lower energy consumption level and thestable indoor thermal environment is also good for human physical health.
