Because of the energy industry, Yan’an’s economy has boomed. Rapid urbanizationleads the expansion of the city scale. And the increasing of population in the city bringsabout the rapid increase of the amount of housing constructions, as well as the buildingspeed. Thus the traditional styles of residential lost its attraction and are mostly replacedby the so called modern apartments. High-rise residential, high-density and high-volumebecame the key words of residential in Yan’an area. However, these new residentialcouldn’t meet the local lifestyle and traditional habits very well. Therefore, to study therelationship between life characteristics and residential styles, can help to improve thedesign of residential buildings in Yanan area.In the thesis, the author based on the theory-consistency of living space andpeople’s behavior–and from the lifestyle analyses, did field research of the cityresidential in Yan’an City. With the recording of the way that how the residentstransform and rebuild their houses, especially from the architectural aspect, the authorsummarized their attitudes to living environment and their standard of satisfaction toapartments, then analyses their standard to see which kind of living houses or apartmentsuits the residents’ lifestyle best. Based on this, the features of qualified living buildingspaces were provided.The thesis is divided into six chapters. The first chapter takes a brief introductionof the background and the motivation, clarifies the purpose and significance of theresearch. The second chapter analyzes the four aspects which impacts the residentialbuilding design in Yan’an area. The Third Chapter takes the traditional cave dwellingas an object, and studies its changing process, then states the improvements which make the cave dwelling suits modern lifestyle. Chapter forth starts with case studies oftypical urban residential, shows the reflecting characters of living space to residentialbuildings. Chapter fifth presents the research of new cave, which is focused on how tomake the old style ones more comfortable. In chapter sixth, the author based on theprevious parts, makes the research conclusions.
