Large commercial buildings have large scale, high space, high hazard of fire andparticular construction. These buildings are quite different from the traditionalarchitecture in the structure, function, building materials and space. It puts forwardnew requirements for the prevention of fire and rescue, and the existing traditional“prescriptive” fire-protection design can no longer meet the requirements of largespace commercial buildings. Therefore, performance-based fire protection design isbecoming a trend of fire design method for large space commercial building and it iswidely used.This article summarizes performance-based fire protection design at home andabroad, and also summarizes the key points and methods for performance-basedfire-protection design. Using a combination of specification and empirical analysismethod, characteristics of the large space commercial buildings and firecharacteristics are analysized. The main points and problems of conventional firedesign and its application to large space commercial building are put forward throughanalysis on some fire case of large space commercial building. Duringperformance-based design, it should be paid attention to safety objectives, selectionof performance indicators, setting of fire scene and determination of key parameters.This article takes two typical samples, that is, Quanzhou Puxi Wanda CommercialPlaza and Jinjiang International Purchasing and Regional Logistics Center in the WestStrait. This article works on the calculation of the amount of smoke in the walkingstreet and smoke movement by analyzing the fire location, fire growth rate and themaximum heat release rate. It focuses on typical problems of fire design difficultiesof these two buildings and adjusts the building plan according to performance-baseddesign. This article simulates the safe evacuation parameters, evacuation time andevacuation scene by using the developed engineering method, and then establishesreliable and effective fire control design system. Some valid and feasible proposal hasbeen put forward on fire-protection safety designs and daily operation management ofcommercial buildings. The performance-based fire-protection design approaches in this paper showcertain practical value to large commercial building for reference. Furthermore, it willpromote fire protection safety design to be scientific, reasonable andcost-effectiveness optimal, and create significant social and economic impacts.
