Power grid planning is one of the most important parts of social and economicdevelopment planning. A scientific and economic rational power grid planning can not onlyguide power grid construction and future development, enhance the power system supplycapacity and reliability, and meet the people’s life and social economic development needs;but also assure upstanding economic and social benefit. At the same time, great changes ofthe energy structure and power consumption structure, rapid growth of power load,increasing enhancement of the power supply reliability requirements, all of those raised alot of new challenges. Therefore, in the new background, new methods and keytechnologies of power grid planning have important theoretical and practical significance.First of all, this paper has a description on the challenges of power grid planning. Then,as the fundamental issue of the basic data collection and analysis of power grid currentsituation, in chapter2, deep discussions of general process and basic work of power gridplanning have been made. Also, there gives the power grid planning process and thereference approach of basic data collection.Load forecasting is the footstone of power grid planning. In chapter3, after anoverview of primarily methods which commonly used in load forecasting, there has ananalysis on the process of medium and long-term load forecasting. At last, in order to makea further illustration of the application of the load forecasting, this paper takes the12thfive-year load forecasting of F city and T city as an example.Network optimization is the key of the power grid planning, and connection modeselection is the basis of network optimization. The fourth chapter of the paper summarizedtypical connection mode at home and abroad firstly. Then the advantages and disadvantagesof the typical connection mode are analyzed on aspects of power supply reliability,investment economy and adaptability. With the example of F city, the typical connectionmode and network planning principle of the power system are introduced in detail.Example shows through year-to-year construction and transformation according to theplanning scheme, the load transfer rate of F city power grid axcended from73.35%year byyear, achieving100%load transfer rate for all lines by the end of2013. It is an important link of the power grid planning to make evaluation of the feasibility,rationality and relative merits of the planning scheme. The fifth chapter of the paperillustrated the evaluation of power supply reliability, line loss, capacity for power supplyand economy from the aspects of calculation methods and evaluation index. The process ofevaluation of planning scheme is expounded in detail with the example of F city powerdistribution network.In addition, it needs to be explained that power grid planning covers a wide range offields. This paper made researches on planning methods and key technologies mainly inview of electrical engineering. Therefore, problems like transmission line corridor planningand substation site selection, etc are not discussed.
