Seismic Design of high-rise buildings has already developed from the traditional design of the bearing capacity fortification to more refined seismic performance based design. In order to meet the high-rise buildings’ multi-level, process-oriented performance goals, it is necessary to put the structural system in rare case of earthquake conditions under which a dynamic plastic time-history analysis will be carried out. High-performance general-purpose nonlinear analysis software is usually the main tool to achieve such a precise analysis of the whole process, then, how to effectively use the tools to carry out sophisticated analysis to examine whether the related performance targets reach the default target is one of the problems in performance-based design area which urgently need s to be addressed.This paper take a building, a216m super high building, located in Kunming Snail Bay center in the8degrees fortified area, as an example. First, determine the seismic performance indicators according to the performance-based design ideas; then use the ABAQUS software to carry out the non-linear analysis of the whole process of elastic-plastic behavior under rare case of earthquake, to achieve the base shear force, ratio of shear to weight, angular displacement between layers, vertex displacement of the structure under heavy earthquake, as well as the core tube wall, concrete columns and other steel components, steel reinforcement layer support, reinforced concrete slabs and others’plastic deformation conditions, the steel yield condition of the elastic-plastic dynamic response and damage patterns. And according to the predefined performance indicators to make an overall evaluation of the structure’s performance. Finally, the paper will develop an automatic transformation code to convert the commonly used structure model to ABAQUS model, further, a check and an application are carried out too.The paper showed that the rational application of ABAQUS software enables the elastic-plastic performance based analysis of high-rise buildings, testing the seismic performance objectives of the structure under race case of earthquake. The code indicated in this paper not only has a very high efficiency of converting, but also can achieve a result that is quite similar to the one which is obtained through manually modelling.
