With the continuous development of our national economy, the demand for power resources is increasing. In many ways of acquiring electric energy, hydroelectric power with its low cost, low pollution and easy operation has become the most important one. At the same time, China has plenty of water resources, which provides a good platform for the rapid development of hydroelectric power generation. Therefore, in the past ten years, our hydropower development is rapid, a variety of large or small hydropower stations were built everywhere in our country, some of which have been in various technical indicators ranked the world’s advanced level. But, in an effort to rapidly increase the installed capacity, at the same time, how to improve the quality of hydropower, how to improving economic benefit of hydropower station, how to reduce the waste of water resources, to realize the use and allocation of resources optimization, has become a very urgent and important task, which put forward the concept of economic operation of hydropower station.In order to improve the economic benefit of individual hydropower station, the most important task is to find the economic operation mode of hydroelectric station. The research of Economic operation of hydropower station is mainly about:when the hydropower station is under the given conditions, to find out the optimal number of work units, to determine the start and stop order and to distribute the load in the most optimal way, which makes sure that the station running in the most economical condition. After mathematical modeling, it is transformed into the optimization problem. At present, the main methods to solve this problem are:The Equal Incremental Rate, Dynamic Programming, Genetic Algorithm and Particle Swarm Optimization.Among them, the Particle Swarm Optimization is a new algorithm, which will be introduced in detail in this paper. Besides we will compare PSO with the Dynamic Programming, which is most commonly used nowadays, and obtain its advantages and disadvantages. In order to strengthen its advantages and avoid the disadvantages, we suggest a possible improvement of PSO. Finally, taking a hydropower station as the model, we turn those two methods to practical account, and demonstrate feasibility of improving.
