City size of China has become larger and larger since the reform and opening policy, our city layout has become more and more compact due to high-density city development. Meanwhile, the rapid development of urban railway transit has led to the diversity of urban public traffic composition. Among all the traffic patterns, suspended monorail can suit the urbanization characteristics of China as one of the main styles of monorail transit.Suspended monorail is a kind of vehicle whose track is a strap beam, it runs when its car body is suspended under the track beam. Suspended monorail has a medium transport capacity and it can be easily constructed with low cost and short time. It can build an aerial track overhead by only occupying the area of ground support and it will not disturb the surface transport. Suspended monorail uses rubber tyres and therefore, it has a strong climbing capacity and curve passing ability. It also gives low voice and comfortable riding.This paper described the technical characteristics of suspended monorail and gave a brief account of the develop history and current status of this monorail. The paper classified and introduced several main suspended transit lines around the world nowadays according to the bogie structural styles and focus on the analysis of the working principle of SAFEGE monorail vehicle bogie. As suspended monorail has not put into operation yet in China, this paper introduced the prospect of suspended monorail in our country according to the operation experience of foreign countries and it shows that suspended monorail has market potential in several application aspects. At present, Shanghai Changning District, Wenzhou City, Luoyang City and other cities of our country all have thought to build suspended monorail system and they are having related investigate and survey currently. If the monorail can put into operation formally, it will stand a good chance to open a new situation of railway transit construction in China.This paper also described the fundamental structure and mechanical properties of rubber tyre. A brief introduction of tyre rolling resistance, adhesion between tyre and road, tyre side-slip characteristics, tyre stiffness characteristics and its model of vertical vibration was given. A theory model of SAFEGE suspended monorail vehicle was built according to the principle of rolling stock dynamics. Degrees of freedom of motion of bogie frame and car body were analysed and the motion equations of bogie frame and car body were also derived. In order to compute the dynamic performance of SAFEGE suspended monorail vehicle, a simulation model was built in dynamics simulation software SIMPACK. The research analysed the influence of nominal force of guiding tyre on critical speed and curve passing of the vehicle. Suspension parameters of the monorail vehicle were optimized in order to improve the riding quality and a reasonable disposition of suspension parameters was obtained. After parameter optimization, the dynamic performance of the suspended monorail vehicle was forecasted at last.The result of analysis shows that the critical speed of the vehicle increases as the nominal force of guiding tyre increases. The change of nominal force of guiding tyre causes no effect to curve passing performance of the vehicle as long as guiding tyre doesn’t leave the guided way. The suspended monorail vehicle after parameter optimization has an excellent riding quality, the indicators reach top grade of standard GB5599-85. When the monorail vehicle passes various curves, all of its curve passing ability indicators are less than their limit values not only in normal condition but also in crosswind acting condition. This monorail vehicle has a fine curve passing performance.The research of this paper provides a certain theoretical reference for intensive study of suspended monorail system in China.
