Objective: Epilepsy is a chronic cerebral disease. There are more than9millionpatients with epilepsy in China. And about30%-40%of these patients suffer differentlevels of cognitive dysfunction. However, there is few medicine for the treatment ofcognitive dysfunction in patients with epilepsy, therefore to seek the medicine to improvecognitive dysfunction in patients with epilepsy is of great significance in clinical. Polyenephosphatidyl choline (PPC) is commonly used as auxiliary treatment for liver disease inclinical. Now, there is experiment has established that PPC can improve cognitive functionof alzheimer’s disease model rats at a certain extent. So, whether PPC could improvecognitive function in patients with epilepsy or not? The study is to definite the effect ofPPC to improve the cognitive dysfunction in epilepsy combined with antiepileptic drugs(AEDs). Valproic acid is a broad spectrum and first-line antiepileptic drugs, and itscommon adverse effect is liver damage. Well, PPC can protect liver function. If PPCcombine with VPA-Mg, could the seizures be controlled well, while cognitive dysfunction and liver damage be improved? So we choosed magnesium valproate (VPA-Mg) as thebasis of the antiepileptic drugs in our study.Method: We collected the patient with epilepsy, who meets the requirements. Whilethe patients with epilepsy came from the epilepsy clinics of our hospital between October2011and October2012. All58cases were divided into VPA-Mg+PPC group (21cases)and VPA-Mg group (37cases). Analyzed the gender, age, course, level of education, seizure types and seizure frequency of patients before patients divided into the group. Then gave the medication to patients. We analyzed the data after the two groups wereobserved24weeks. We need to statistics and analysis the seizure frequency of two groups, and the scores of Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS-cog) and MontrealCognitive Assessment (MoCA) Beijing Version. In addition, we still should observepatients with adverse effects during the research.Result: The seizure frequency of two groups reduced. Compared with VPA-Mggroup, cognitive evaluation was significantly improved in VPA-Mg+PPC group (P<0.05).There was no adverse effects in VPA-Mg+PPC group. And the livers dysfunction ofpatients in this group were improved. Conclusions: PPC combined with VPA-Mg on patients with epilepsy can not onlycontrol the seizures and resist adverse effects of liver caused by VPA-Mg, but also canimprove the cognitive impairment of patients with epilepsy.
