Objective To understand the iodine nutritional status of ethnic minority school-age children in remote areas and evaluate the prevention effect of iodine deficiency disorders we undertook a goiter rate and urinary iodine level screening of Wa boarding school children in Yunnan Province. Methods Random sample of650Wa boarding school-age children using an arsenic cerium catalytic spectrophotometric method for measurement of urinary iodine; random sample of727Wa boarding school-age children to check goiter rate of diagnosis of thyroid palpation. Results Urinary iodine:650studentswere tested for urinary iodine. The median was263.1μ g/L. There were616(94.77%) samples of urinary iodine over100μ g/L.727wa students at the age from6-13were examined. And70were found goiter that accounted for9.63%. Out of the70students,2were goiter II with the percentage of0.27%.Water iodine:57water samples were tested with standard method, the median number was0.972μg/L, the contents of iodine in water ranged between0.611~1.473μg/L. The number for water samples whose iodine content<1μg/L was32, accounted for56.1%of the total samples. Monitored32salt samples totally in the school cafeteria, and the median iodine content of salt was25.53mg/kg, and the qualified iodized salt consumption rate was100%, the qualified rate of iodized salt was100%. Conclusion The iodine nutritional status of Wa boarding school children meets national health standards:both the level of urinary iodine as well as the goiter rate meets the national criteria for elimination of iodine deficiency disorders. There is little iodine content of water in the region. Under present iodine content of salt the iodine nutritional levels of residents in Shuangjiang is suitable, and iodine excess does not exist.
