Objective To determine the impact of interventions on the degree of warping of costal cartilage and the clinical application of costal cartilage in rhinoplasty. Methods The project was completed at The second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University animal research laboratory. The costal cartilage of health domestic pigs was harvested. The cartilage was cut into the typical dorsal rib graft with blade. We have4method to prevent the costal cartilage from warping, we divide it into4groups:Concentric dorsal grafts, eccentric dorsal grafts, accordion technique and internal stabilization. After carving grafts were placed in chondrocytes culture liquid in vitro, photographs were then taken from a frontal and lateral view at5min,15min,30min, lhour,2hour,3hour,1day,7day,14day,30day. The angle of curvature was measured from the photographs by Image-Pro Plus6.0. For the clinical application, during the period April2010to November2012,54patients (9man and45female) who were admitted to our hospital for rhinoplasty were considered for this study. The mean age of the patients was24.91years (range19-39years). At a mean follow-up of12.5months (range2weeks to 31months). Evaluation the postoperative therapeutic result of patients. Results For the frontal views and the lateral view, More warping occurred in the eccentric group than the other groups at each time point(p<0.05). The second is accordion technique group, the internal stabilization group shows the minimal warping. There were no significant difference among concentric dorsal grafts, accordion technique and internal stabilization group(P>0.05). The clinical application of costal cartilage in rhinoplasty shown a good result. Conclusions Costal cartilage can be effectively used for grafting in rhinoplasty with minimal warping if concentric dorsal grafts, accordion technique or internal stabilization are used, If the concentric dorsal grafts and accordion technique can not prevent the warping of costal cartilage, Kirschner wire internal stabilization is also a good choice.
