As the globalization trend around the world, China’s reform and opening up to the outside becomes increasingly further, and the need of exchanges with the rest of the world in economic and cultural becomes more and more urgent. This makes a frequently rise to the need for the translation of publicity materials. The goal of publicity materials translation is to make sure the target readers understand the information the source text conveys accurately. In order to achieve this purpose, the translator should try not to translate literally but bring their subjective initiative into play and adopt a target-oriented approach to make the target readers fully and accurately catch the information of the source text, by the methods of deletion, addition, or rewriting etc. This thesis is trying to find out the answer from the Skopostheorie. Skopostheorie was introduced into translation theory by Hans Vermeer in the1970s. It points out that translation is a human activity with determined purpose. Skopostheorie allows the same text being translated into different versions with different translation targets. It makes a tremendous challenge for the traditional translation theory’s dominant position and studies translation activity from a new angle-the translator. Skopostheorie maybe cannot be considered as the most important theory in the western translation area, but it indeed bring out a solid theoretical support for the translator’s subjectivity in translation practice of publicity materials. It is a worthy topic to figure out how to use Skopostheorie as a guiding theory for translation of publicity materials.
