Film subtitles translation is a relatively new field in the research of translation both at home and abroad. Although there are many studies about film translation, the relevant study of film translation in China started later than that in the west. And the study of subtitle translation is still not mature in China. On the basis of Skopostheorie, this thesis explores translator’s subjectivity in Twelve Years a Slave film subtitle translation in three aspects:the demonstration of translator’s subjectivity in the process of subtitle translation; factors that influence the display of translator’s subjectivity; and the "moderate" problems of the restrictions of translator’s subjectivity. Qualitative research method is adopted to systematically and comprehensively analyze both English and Chinese subtitles of Twelve years a Slave.Through the thorough study, the display of translator’s subjectivity in subtitle translation exists in:firstly, before translation, a translator should consider from the target audience during the original interpretation; secondly, during subtitle translation, translator adopts different translation strategies according to different needs, such as deletion, substitution, expansion, condensation, and free translation in the linguistic level, domestication translation and adaptation translation in the cultural level. Factors affecting translator’s subjectivity include translator’s competence:accomplishment in mastering the source and target language, encyclopedic knowledge, and strong sense of responsibility; social-cultural factors; and ideology. Besides, the display of translator’s subjectivity is not totally free but restricted by coherence rule and the creative faithfulness principle.
