The thesis is based on the two Chinese translations of The Catcher in the Rye and Nida’s functional equivalence theory. The Catcher in the Rye is a classic novel written by American writer J. D. Salinger in1951.Through portray Holden, the novel reproduces the teenagers spiritual situation after the Second World War. Holden’s unique language feature is very popular around the world, especially among teenagers. At present, there are two Chinese translations.Nida’s functional equivalence theory focuses on stylistic equivalence, word equivalence, passage equivalence, and sentence equivalence. As the functional equivalence emphasizes reader response, it suits literary translation, and the theory is also good for the translation of The Catcher in the Rye.Chapter one introduces the research background both at home and abroad. Chapter two explains the development and characters of functional equivalence theory and its instructional meaning on the thesis. Chapter three is the main part, which researches from word and stylistic equivalence separately. Chapter four is the summary.
