This report explores the difficulties in applying the principle of syntactic linearity in simultaneous interpreting and clarifies them. The principle of syntactic linearity is known as the golden rule in simultaneous interpreting. If you want to have a perfect command of this rule, you need to practice a lot and be in the habit of translating based on the original structure. The report gives you a brief introduction to the simultaneous interpretation and then notes the importance of the principle and cites theories made by Zhong Weihe, Zeng Zhuangsheng to better explain the principle and then analyzes its application in president Obama’s victory speech. The author focus on difficulties including apposition, attributive, adverbial. comparative degree and it clause, and concludes some rules in applying the principle, hoping which can serve as guidance in actual simultaneous interpreting. At last, I give a conclusion for what I’ve learnt from the report and explain the meaning of my report.
