As the communication between China and America is becoming more and more frequent in recent years, it is more important for us to understand the American history and mainstream value of the society. The translation text is about13,000English words and has no Chinese version in China. It abstracts from The Puritan Origins of the American Self written by Sacvan Bercovitch who is a famous Americanist, literary and cultural critic and academic. The text is mainly about the historical process of colonial America. The New England Puritans denied the "Old World." Holding their imperial enterprise, they came to the "New World":America is the new Promised Land that the God gave them, which is the new world against the old world. Over the next two centuries, they finally established a new identity, the United States as "America."This text belongs to academic works, which is characterized by sophisticated construction and more professional vocabulary. Therefore, in the process of translation, I am caught up in so many difficult problems, such as the English name, the religious vocabulary and the long difficult sentence. In order to solve these problems, I study them carefully, and finally I find some translation ways and skills. In the process of translation, several translation skills have been used, such as omission, amplification, reconstruction, noting and so on. With applying all skills to the practice, a deep personal understanding of translation came into mind. Translation is an art, at the same time, the translator is a jack-of-all-trades. Only never stop learning the new knowledge can the translator make a great progress in the translation career.
