Although the interpreting research at home started relatively late, there’s anincreasing demand for interpreters in China. As to improvement methods there are stillno systematic research. Under this circumstance, based on Gile’s ComprehensionEquation and Efforts Model, referring relevant materials, this thesis tries tohave a comprehensive analysis about frequently confronted problems and barriers inconference consecutive interpreting and offer proper solutions and coping strategy,hoping to make some contribution to future’s theoretical and practical study ofinterpretation.Through research, the major findings of this thesis include the following threeaspects. Firstly, it demonstrates that Gile’s Efforts Model and Comprehension Equationcan be applied to the analysis of barriers confronted in consecutive interpreting.Secondly, with the theoretical basis, the barriers can be classified into two maincategories: linguistic and extra-linguistic factors. Thirdly, this thesis offers propersolutions to those barriers and problems confronted during consecutive interpreting withexamples so as to make theories much more persuasive and the thesis more convincing.The introduction part of this thesis explains the background information, writingpurposes and structure of this thesis, aiming at studying difficulties of comprehension inconference consecutive interpreting and offering solutions.Chapter I is an overview of interpreting, including its definition, classifications.According to different contents and purposes, interpreting can be classified intoconference interpreting and non-conference interpreting. According to the utterancelength to be interpreted and skills used by professional interpreters, conferenceinterpreting can be divided into consecutive interpreting and simultaneous interpreting.ChapterⅡintroduces Gile’s Efforts Model and Comprehension Equation and theirGuidance to consecutive Interpreting. In the Effort Model of consecutive interpreting,Daniel Gile categorizes the process of CI into two phases: listening phase andreformulation phase. In the listening phase, interpreters listen to the source language andtake notes, while in the reformulation phase, interpreters reproduce information in thetarget language based on memory and notes. According to Comprehension Equationinterpreters should equip with linguistic knowledge, extra-linguistic knowledge and analysis ability."Listening" is the first step in the process of consecutive interpretationand has to be done in an active or a concentrated way. Short-term memory stores theinformation that has been selected and interpreters note down the key words then fullyutilize of their linguistic knowledge and extra-linguistic knowledge to reformulate anddeliver the source message to the target language. Throughout the comprehension process,the interpreter has to make both psychological and cognitive efforts to determine how tobest allocate his attention.In Chapter Ⅲ, on the basis of Gile’s theories, the author finds out major factorsaffecting the interpreting performance and provides proper solutions. Lexical barriersinvolve neologisms, abbreviations, figures and technical terms. Syntactic barriers includeidioms and proverbs, classical allusions, poems and humor, syntactic mistakes,long-and-complex sentences etc. Extra-linguistic barriers depend on whether interpretershave encyclopedic knowledge, specialized knowledge and situational knowledge. Thus,the author gives proper solutions and coping strategy.In conclusion, the author summarizes the research and points out the importance andlimitations of this study.
