With the deepening of globalization and the improvement of China’s internationalposition, China is integrating into the international society in a larger scope and range,which has, on one hand, brought more job opportunities to interpreters, while on theother hand, set up a glorious stage for them to realize their value of life. Interpretationplays an important role in the modernization of China. After entering into the21stcentury, China’s more frequent interactions with the rest of the world are setting a higherstandard for the quality of interpretation. It has been universally recognized thatinterpretation plays an important role in cross-culture communication. Interpretation hasalways been characterized as a highly professional job. Good interpretation conveyssimple but adequate information. It requires interpreters to deliver messages from onelanguage to another without any changes in the meaning within limited time, whichunquestionably requires the interpreters to have highly qualified abilities and skills.Therefore, it is every interpreter’s responsibility to improve his ability and skills in orderto seize the opportunity and face the challenge.The interpretive theory of the interpretive school is regarded as the most influentialas well as valuable theoretical system in the international interpreting world. Based onthe division of language levels in linguistics, the interpretive theory has also dividedtranslation into three levels which are the langue level, the parole level and the discourselevel. Meanwhile, through the establishment of the interpretation triangular model, theinterpretive school also made a creative statement of the three procedures ofinterpretation which includes comprehension, deverbalization and re-expression. Due toits unique theoretical perspective and its thorough theoretical framework which has beenimproved constantly, the interpretive theory once became a leading theory around thewestern interpreting world. It has led the interpreting study of the western world into anew stage where the researchers are also interpretation practitioners. The interpretivetheory also has a significant influence on the interpretation study of China.China is integrating into the international society in a larger scope and range, whichhas, on one hand, brought more job opportunities to interpreters, while on the other hand,set up a glorious stage for them to realize their value of life. In this thesis, the author overviews basic theories of the interpretive school, focuses on the abilities and skills thatthe interpreters should have to be qualified for interpretation and then providessuggestions and solutions to the research questions. Interpretation is flexible, whichmeans that different interpreters may have different methods to learn and to work. Theauthor has made some researches and analyses on the basic theories of the interpretivetheory as well as some cases. The author hopes to have made a clear and thoroughstatement of her suggestions concluded from the author’s own experience of learning andworking as an interpreter, and provides this thesis for the readers as a reference for theirfuture studies on interpretation.This thesis consists of three major parts:The first part is an introduction to the international background and practicalsignificance of composing this thesis.The second part is the main body of this thesis. Chapter one gives a clear statementof the origin and development of the interpretive theory. Then the author alsosummarizes main concepts of the interpretive theory.Chapter two discusses the features and criteria of interpretation. The author thenanalyzes the basic abilities and skills that interpreters should have according to theinterpretive theory, which are bilingual competence, interpretation techniques andcultural awareness.Then chapter three goes into relevant interpreting strategies in the perspective ofinterpretive theory, which include proper explanation, reasonable prediction, meaningequivalence and cultural transmission.At last, the author makes a general conclusion of the basic views of the interpretivetheory as well as the suggested ways to improve interpreters’ abilities and skills ininterpretation.Through the theories as well as examples, the author wishes to provide somepractical strategies for the interpreters in their real work.
