Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), an indispensable part of Chinese culture, has been developed into an integral scientific system, after a long-time medical practice. The TCM term is the cardinal part of the TCM theory. A standardized and qualified terms translation can greatly improve the quality and quantity of the TCM translation. This paper is the study of translation principles and strategies with regard to TCM terms from the perspective of skopos theory. In thesis is presented the history of TCM term translation practice and study together with an introduction to skopos theories. This is followed by discussions from the cultural and linguistic perspectives, including social-cultural background of the establishment of the TCM Theoretical system, the philosophical foundation, the characteristics and classifications of TCM Terms and the application of figures of speech. Numerous sets of translation principles have sprung up home and abroad in recent decades. But fundamentally, they can be put into two categories:the source-oriented vs. the reader-oriented principle. According to Skopostheorie, the primary principle of TCM term translation is to appropriately adopting of both principles in line with the specific purpose of translation, while reaching the requirement of accuracy, conciseness, consistence and conformity to the popular usage. Based on this principle, standard application and limits of those dominant translation strategies are given, such as literal translation, transliteration and free translation.
